What You Need to Know About Rovin

The overarching investment philosophy that drives portfolio management decisions at Rovin Capital comes down to three basic principles:

1) Slow and steady wins the race – one of our long-standing investment mantras is “the market is a wonderful tool to enhance wealth, but should not be the preferred tool to create wealth.” Having a seasoned partner by your side that can take a more objective view can be very helpful – especially in maintaining a long-term perspective. Einstein said that compounding interest was the eighth wonder of the world, but just as it took years to build the great pyramids of Egypt, the same holds true with most successful investment strategies.

2) Keep the approach simple – while today’s markets are far more complex than they used to be,this does not mean that the solutions offered to clients need to mirror this increased complexity. Our desire is that each client understands how their money is invested. If a client believes in the process then they will feel confident that their objectives and goals will be achieved. As the great da Vinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.”

3) Diversification, allocation, and costs trump all – time and time again, empirical data has shown that the greatest factors impacting portfolio performance are (i) prudent diversification, (ii) proper asset allocation, and (iii) controlling costs. These three factors are at the forefront any time we build a new relationship and accompanying investment portfolio.

We manage a variety of strategies ranging from tactical to strategic. We use ETFs, mutual funds, individual stocks, individual bonds as well as structured products. We subscribe to ModernPortfolio Theory where we feel there are efficiencies in the market and active management cannot add alpha in a highly probable way. We use actively managed funds where inefficiencies exist. We have a tactical allocation strategy that trades monthly and is ETF-based. We have a strategic allocation strategy that trades when there are significant shifts in macro/micro market conditions. This strategy uses both ETFs and actively managed mutual funds. Some of our clients prefer individual equities and we run two large-cap strategies with individual equities. We also have a cash solution, a fixed income solution, and offer highly customized portfolios for more complex clients.

Matthew Staffieri’s current role with Rovin Capital is Chief Investment Officer. In this role, he oversees the various investment areas of the firm. Although Matthew oversees the implementation, Rovin Capital has a disciplined process that includes the expertise and wisdom of multiple individuals, both inside and outside Rovin Capital. Were anything to happen to Matthew, there are multiple processes and individuals in place to take over.

As our firm has evolved over the years, we went from relying on portfolio managers with whom we had little contact, to portfolio managers with whom we had constant contact, to in-house portfolio management with an in-house investment committee. These changes have brought about three key advantages for our clients: (i) they allow us to be more agile and customized in our approach to managing clients’ money, (ii) they allow us to offer clients more investment options that were unavailable before, and (iii) they allow us to pass significant savings onto our clients as we’ve removed various intermediaries.

Rovin Capital has a disciplined process for making investment decisions. Our process begins with independent research for which we pay a substantial amount of money. The independent research firms that we use have experts that cover every section of the global markets from U.S. equities to international equities to global fixed income, and everything in-between. Sample firms includeNed Davis Research, Morningstar, Schwab Institutional, CFRA, Reuters, Bloomberg, etc. Our team then compiles this research and presents it to our internal investment committee that includes Matthew Staffieri, Michael Staffieri, Markell Staffieri, Eric Pierce, and others. This investment committee meets regularly and covers everything from the macro backdrop to the micro details of each individual investment strategy. As part of this process, the team reviews performance on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. Because we utilize actively managed funds in some of our strategies, part of our process also involves speaking with fund managers on a regular basis to discuss what they are seeing, how the funds have performed, and what their expectations are for future performance. In whole, these managers and professionals invest trillions of dollars in assets and include companies like BlackRock, PIMCO, JP Morgan, Hartford, Prudential, Columbia Threadneedle, MFS, Janus Henderson, etc. Between the research firms we use, our internal investment committee, and external fund managers, we utilize the expertise of more than 100+ industry experts in our decision process.
