What You Need to Know About Rovin
The overarching investment philosophy that drives portfolio management decisions at Rovin Capital- and makes us one of the best RIA firms in the Phoenix and Salt Lake City areas- boils down to three basic principles:
1) Slow and steady wins the race. One of our long-standing investment mantras is that “the market is a wonderful tool to enhance wealth, but should not be one’s preferred tool to create wealth.” Having a seasoned partner by your side who can take a more objective view can be very helpful — especially in maintaining a long-term perspective. Einstein said that compounding interest was the eighth wonder of the world, but just as it took years to build the great pyramids of Egypt, the same holds true with most successful investment strategies.
2) A simple approach is the best approach. While today’s markets are far more complex than they used to be,this does not mean that the solutions offered to clients need to mirror this increased complexity. Our desire is that each client understands how their money is invested. If a client believes in the process then they will feel confident that their objectives and goals will be achieved. As the great da Vinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.”
3) Diversification, allocation, and costs trump all. Time and time again, empirical data has shown that the greatest factors impacting portfolio performance are (i) prudent diversification, (ii) proper asset allocation, and (iii) controlling costs. These three factors are at the forefront any time we build a new relationship and accompanying investment portfolio.
We employ a variety of investment analysis and portfolio management methods, ranging from tactical to strategic:
- ETFs
- Mutual funds
- Individual stocks
- Individual bonds
- Structured products
We subscribe to Modern Portfolio Theory, in which we feel there are efficiencies in the market, and that active management cannot add alpha in a highly probable way. We use actively managed investment funds where inefficiencies exist. Our tactical allocation strategy trades monthly and is ETF-based. We also employ a strategic allocation strategy that trades when there are significant shifts in macro/micro market conditions. This strategy uses both ETFs and actively managed mutual funds. Some of our clients prefer individual equities and we run two large-cap strategies with individual equities. We also have a cash solution, a fixed-income solution, and offer highly customized portfolios for clients with more complex needs.
Christopher Heyman is the Chief Investment Officer at Rovin Capital. Heyman oversees the various investment areas of the firm. Although Christopher oversees the implementation of our managed investment accounts, Rovin Capital has a disciplined process that factors in the expertise and wisdom of multiple individuals, both inside and outside of the firm. Were anything to happen to Christopher, there are multiple processes and individuals in place to continue these operations.
As our firm has evolved over the years, we have gone from relying on outsourced investment management, to employing in-house portfolio management with our own investment committee. This shift to employing our own portfolio management team has produced three key advantages for our clients: (i) we’ve been able to be more agile and customized in our approach to managing clients’ money, (ii) we offer our clients more investment options than were previously available, and (iii) we’ve been able to pass significant savings onto our clients as we’ve removed unnecessary intermediaries.
Rovin Capital has a disciplined process for making investment decisions, and for managing associated investment risk. Our process begins with independent research, on which we spare no expense. Experts at the independent research firms with whom we consult cover every section of the global markets, from U.S. and international equities to global fixed income, and everything in between. These firms include Ned Davis Research, Morningstar, Schwab Institutional, CFRA, Reuters, Bloomberg, and more. Our team compiles these firms’ research and presents it to our internal investment committee. This committee is composed of Matthew Staffieri, Michael Staffieri, Markell Staffieri, and Eric Pierce, among others. This committee of investment fund managers meets regularly and covers everything from the macro backdrop to the micro details of each individual risk managed investment. As part of this investment management process, the team reviews the investments’ performance on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. Because we utilize actively managed funds in some of our strategies, part of our process also involves speaking with fund managers on a regular basis to discuss what they are seeing, how their funds have performed, and what their expectations are for their future performance. On the whole, these investment management consultants invest trillions of dollars in assets and work with companies like BlackRock, PIMCO, JP Morgan, Hartford, Prudential, Columbia Threadneedle, MFS, Janus Henderson, and others. Between the research firms with which we work, our internal investment committee, and our external fund managers, we utilize the expertise of more than 100+ industry experts in our decision process.
Investment Strategies Tailored to Meet Each Individual Investor's Objectives.
In order to achieve these objectives, the portfolio management team uses a diverse set of investment vehicles, including:
Investment Philosophy
- Slow and steady wins the race
- Keep the approach simple
- Diversification, allocation, and costs trump all
Investment Strategies
- Stocks (equities)
- Bonds (fixed income)
- Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)
- Open End Mutual Funds
- Closed End Mutual Funds/Interval Funds
- Structured Notes

Each of these investment vehicles is vetted for both the suitability and comfort level of the individual client.
